Wil Anderson: Wilful Misconduct reveals a whole new side to the wize-cracking host of The Gruen Transfer. We may have come to love him, but his show in this year's Melbourne International Comedy Festival reveals that we don't know him as well as we might think.Wil Anderson is a consummate standup comedian who had the packed audience in the Comedy Theatre last night eating out of his hands and in fits of laughter from start to finish. His delivery was fast and furious, like a rapper on speed, and there was hardly a taboo subject that he didn't touch on and, with that ultimate twist that is unique to the best comics, turn into a moment that was not only truly funny but also, when the laughter had died down (which was not till after the show), genuinely thought-provoking.
Let them Go! Was Wil's catch-call, catch-all, of the night. You name the subject, it was given an airing: sex, drugs, racism, euthanasia, children's TV. Celebrities too got a serve, as did religion, political correctness and evolution. In fact evolution was a kind of theme – let's let go of all these stupidities and evolve into better humans!
Anderson played the audience really effectively, revealing his quick wit and ensuring that there was never a dull moment, even when he didn't quite get the response he had expected. And his physicality was really impressive, bringing variety to his presentation, along with the much needed pauses for Wil to catch a drink and the audience to catch their breath before the next onslaught of laughter.
An hour of thought-provoking, rapid fire delivery which sent the laugh metre into overdrive.
